PM steam

After much delay from the threat of foul weather and a line up for bait and fuel in the morning, the ole 40′ Young brothers plots a course towards home harbor. The NNE winds quieted their restless assault by 11:00 am and by 1:30 pm the last string of the day was hauled. Chatter on the radio of low returns in traps and rumors of prices rising near Vinalhaven.

Fall

39 degrees? Yup- beginning to feel a lot of clarity in the September weather. Winds have a sharpness to them and the air is crisp. These fleeting moments of the short season. Keeping a weather eye out for the “Line Storm”- which old timers use to mark the change in maritime weather from the peace and bliss of summer to the sharp howls of late fall and winter. Marked by a blow, the winds afterwards tend to shift and intensify until the Spring “Line Storm”.

We are hauling the island today. May fortune and favorable conditions mark the day! Looks like Tuesday & Wednesday will be off days away from the water. Some weather is blowing in Tuesday evening- Wednesday.

Islands

270 lbs

Wait, 270 lbs? Really? Well at least the price is high, right?

$2.85 a pound.

There seems so be some head scratching about this year. As of yet there has not been any hint of another run of lobster. Was the glut this spring phase 1? And the run in July number 2? Will there even be a fall run? oh brother!

Well day off from filling bags! Yo ho ho!

The islands in the muscle ridge channel, along with Matinic, the green islands, matinicus, (& criehaven) and monhegan are the islands with allotted berths to fish those given territories. A berth on criehaven in the 80’s cost about $50,000. Today that berth is worth about $175,000. There are a total of 9 berths on criehaven. Territory is fiercely protected.
